Thinkers & Thoughts
Creator & Creatures
After reading some current essays on idealism I have to note the degree to which the discussion was cast in analytic terms. This concession to analysis I believe shortchanges the potential of idealism. I prefer a more monistic perspective and use a metanarrative for exposition and explanation.
Consider the usual distinction between thinkers and their thoughts. Such a distinction may seem perfectly natural, but consider a less dualistic alternative. Thinkers are constituted mainly by their thinking. Call this a process view.
Personal identity is based mainly upon memory. Memories in turn derive from the narrative they allegedly comprise. The above identification of thinker and thinking may then be amended to the statement that I am my story.
Following this line of thought quickly casts us into the plight of the characters in search of an author that are thereby waiting for Godot. I submit that Godot in her turn is waiting upon us to finish our story that is also herstory. Evidently reality is highly recursive.
The Metanarrator will be the prophet of the final apocalyptic revelation, or simply the messiah. Let us all sharpen our skills, and may the best storyteller win.
